Our Coffees

Bette Buna — Ethiopia

Tasting Notes

A clean and juicy coffee with notes of blackberry, nectarine, panela, and rose. The acidity is bright yet balanced, with a natural sweetness that carries through the entire experience. A classic washed Ethiopian coffee with an elegant floral finish that lingers on the palate.

Origin

This lot comes from the Taferi Kelaommunity in the Sidama region,at an altitude of 2,100–2,210 meters above sea level. It is composed of Heirloom varieties grown by smallholder farmers working within a traditional agroforestry environment.

Process

This is a classic Ethiopian washed process: depulping, followed by 24–36 hours of fermentation in concrete tanks with water, washing and float separation, and then slow drying for 8 to 15 days on raised beds. Finally, the coffee rests in storage to stabilize moisture and fully develop its aromatic profile.

Story & Community

This coffee reaches us through our friends at Bette Buna, whose name means “House of Coffee.” Their work in Taferi Kela goes far beyond coffee itself: they strengthen the community by teaching sustainable farming practices, promoting the harvesting of ripe cherries, and distributing more than 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings each year.

Their economic impact is remarkable: each seedling can generate at least $2 per year for farmers once the tree begins producing, representing more than $650,000 annually in a region where household incomes are extremely low.

Bette Buna also stands out for its commitment to equal opportunity and for providing dignified employment to people with disabilities, single mothers, and marginalized groups. Their level of traceability is exceptional: each lot identifies the people who harvested, processed, and dried the coffee, ensuring fair wages and complete transparency.

Process

This lot has been processed using a carefully controlled method that respects the character of the bean. After hand-picking, the cherries are sorted by ripeness and undergo a process designed to enhance sweetness and complexity. Slow and even drying preserves the purity of flavor and the silky texture in the cup.

Story

Produced by smallholder farmers working with sustainable practices, this coffee reflects the tradition and knowledge of generations dedicated to coffee cultivation. Each harvest is the result of artisanal work that honors the land, climate, and coffee culture of its origin.
