Coffee by the Numbers

If you think you’re the only person who can’t function without a morning dose of caffeine, global data will prove you right. Coffee isn’t just a beverage; it’s a global economic engine and a ritual shared by cultures across every continent.

A Giant of Global Trade

Coffee is the second most‑consumed beverage on the planet, only behind water. It’s estimated that between 1.6 and 2 billion cups are consumed every day worldwide. (We at Buna would be perfectly happy serving just 0.00001% of that amount.)

At an economic level, the impact is astonishing: it is the second most‑traded commodity in the world, surpassed only by oil. We’re talking about more than 10 billion kilos traded every year..

Who Produces It and Who Drinks It?

The geography of coffee is clearly divided between the countries that grow it (near the equator) and those that consume it massively (generally in the Northern Hemisphere).

  • The Leading Producer: Brazil dominates the market, growing 30.16% of the world’s coffee production. It is followed by Vietnam (primarily producing Robusta), Colombia, Indonesia, Honduras, and Ethiopia.
  • The Mecca of Coffee Shops: Italians have an undeniable passion for espresso. It’s no surprise that Italy is the country with the highest density of coffee shops: one establishment for every 600 inhabitants.

The Ranking of the Biggest Coffee Drinkers

Paradoxically, the colder the country, the more coffee its people consume per capita. Here’s the ranking by kilos consumed per person per year:

  1. Finland: 12 kg (the undisputed champions).
  2. Norway: 9.9 kg.
  3. Iceland: 9 kg.
  4. Denmark: 8.7 kg.
  5. Netherlands: 8.4 kg.
  6. Sweden: 8.2 kg.
  7. Switzerland: 7.9 kg.

And what about us? Spain sits right in the middle of the ranking (19th place), with a not‑at‑all negligible consumption of 4.5 kilos per person per year..
